Renovate or rebuild?

The bridge in mohrenstrabe over the itz is 80 years old and in poor condition. Already five years ago the bridge had the mark "minus 3,5" get. The scale ends at "minus 4. The order for preparatory work for the demolition and new construction was given by the building and environment senate in the spring of 2012. The basis for the decision to demolish and not to rehabilitate was the poor result of the bridge inspection and the recommendation of an economic feasibility study: a new building would be more favorable than rehabilitation. Five years ago, the renovation was estimated at 1.2 million euros, and a new building at 1.08 million euros.
However, the state office for the preservation of historical monuments has raised "considerable concerns about the demolition of the listed mohrenbrucke". In addition to the bridge structure itself, the former kiosk and the figure of the seated woman on the other side of the street are listed as historic monuments. Criticism was levelled at the lack of an assessment of the heritage value and value of the site prior to the decision to demolish the bridge. The effects of the construction work on the kiosk, the bridge figure, the bank walls and especially on house 9/10, which stands directly on the itz and is also on the list of monuments, have not been taken into account.
Now the city of coburg wants to enter the new "future of the city" challenge program to be taken up. This program finances construction projects that improve "circulation and quality of stay in the inner city area" drive. The new building, but also the renovation of the mohrenbrucke and the planned walking and biking path along the itz could be subsidized from this program. However, this requires a supplementary remediation report, which is now to be prepared by tuv rheinland. Of the costs of over 17,400 euros, the state office for the preservation of historical monuments wants to pay 10,000 euros. The building senate spoke out on wednesday in favor of the new expert opinion. City planner karl baier: the report was sensible, but open-ended. A result should be available before the end of this year.
The condition of the mohrenbrucke has certainly not improved in the past five years. Second mayor birgit weber (CSU) explained the delay with the construction of the bridge in the ernst-faber-strabe, the repairs for the old guterbahnhof land, and after all, such a construction site in the city center should be avoided during the state exhibition. Signs still restrict the maximum permissible total weight of vehicles to 24 tons. Now the tonnage will be further reduced to a maximum of 16 tons. "The bridge is not in acute danger of collapse", reassured weber. City buses could continue to drive over it in passing traffic.
